Gnaeus Julius Agricola

37 - 93

Roman statesman and soldier. Born at Forum Julii (Frejus in Provence), Agricola served with distinction in Britain, Asia and Aquitania. He was elected Consul and appointed Governor of Britain in 77 AD and became the first Roman general to effectively subdue the greater part of the island. In his last campaign (c.86 A.D.) he defeated the Caledonians under Galgacus at the battle of Mons Graupius. After this military campaign which stretched North of the River Forth in Scotland, his fleet circumnavigated Britain discovering it to be an island for the first time. Agricola was finally recalled to Rome in 87 AD.
