John Murray


(Marquess of Tullibardine)

1684 - 1709

Soldier. Born at Kinneil, the son of John Murray, the 1st Duke of Atholl, and Lady Catherine Hamilton, Murray was educated at the University of Leyden (Netherlands) and entered the Army of Holland, rising to the rank of Colonel. As the eldest son of the Duke of Atholl, he gained to the courtesy title of Marquess of Tullibardine in 1703, but was never to succeed to the Dukedom. He fought with the Dutch-British-Austrian Alliance against the French during the War of the Spanish Succession and saw action in the Battle of Oudenarde (1708). He was killed the following year during the Battle of Malplaquet and lies buried in Brussels.
