Rev. Thomas Mair

c.1700 - 1768

Minister of the Secession Church in the parish of Orwell, Kinross-shire. Ordained in the Old Kirk of Orwell in 1725, he seceded from the Established Church in 1737 and the majority of his parishioners went with him. They were ejected from the parish church in 1742 and built a meeting house nearby which could accommodate 2000 people. However, Mair's sermons were so popular that congregations exceeded 5000 in number. He was charged with heresy in 1757.
