Robert Bald

1776 - 1861

Surveyor and mining engineer. Born in Culross (W Fife), the son of a coal agent, Bald helped Thomas Telford (1757 - 1834) survey the Gotha Canal from Lake Malaren (Stockholm) to the lakes of Vaner and Vettir in Central Sweden. He went on to publish papers on mining and worked on various mining projects, surveying mines across Scotland and preparing plans of the workings. He also managed the Alloa collieries of the Earl of Mar and was noted for condemning the practice of employing women and girls underground.

Between 1829 and 1833 he worked with his cousin, William Bald (1789 - 1857), to produce a geological map for Scotland for the Highland and Agricultural Society of Scotland.

He died in Alloa.
