D. Alan Stevenson


1891 - 1971

Lighthouse engineer. Born in Edinburgh, the son of Charles Stevenson (1855 - 1950), Stevenson was educated at the Edinburgh Academy. He was the last of the great Lighthouse Stevenson dynasty. During the First World War he was directed to place lights on the Dardanelles (Turkey) to protect allied shipping. On leaving the Royal Marines, he became a partner in the family firm (1919) and went on to work in Scotland and India. He was also responsible for deepening the River Clyde to allow the passage of the liner Queen Mary after she was launched in 1934.

He died at his home at 25 Belgrave Crescent in Edinburgh and lies buried in Dean Cemetery.
