Sam Torrance

1953 -

Golfer. Born in Largs (North Ayrshire), Torrance was raised in Rossendale (Lancashire, England), where his father was appointed golf coach, before returning to Largs as a teenager. He turned professional in 1970 and has had considerable success, with his prize-money exceeding £1 million in 1995. In the same year he was awarded an MBE.

He has appeared for Scotland in 11 World Cup matches and 9 Alfred Dunhill Cup matches, captaining his country to victory at St Andrews in 1995. Of his numerous Ryder Cup matches, the wins in 1985 and 2002 (both at the Belfry) were the most memorable. Torrance captained the team in 2002 and was rewarded with an OBE in the 2003 New Year Honours List.

Torrance now lives in Wentworth (England).
