The Gazetteer for Scotland project began in 1995 with charitable funding which helped us to bring you the thousands of the pages which we currently provide. However, this support came to an end some years ago and we now rely solely on your donations.

Our mission it to provide well-written, editorially-checked, clear, factual and unbiased information which explains the geography and history of Scotland to the World. This web site is based in Scotland and edited by Scots. It is strongly our view that this information should be free so it is available to all, but especially for educational use and for those who cannot afford to pay. Yet, we incur very real costs.

In addition, the more we achieve, the more we realise needs to be done. We already offer one of the largest Scottish web sites available, yet have more than 75,000 entries which still need to be written and regularly add to that total! Existing entries constantly need to be updated and additional photographs taken. All effort is currently provided on a voluntary basis.

How will your donation be used?

• Add new entries faster (at the current rate, the entries we know we have to write will take 70 years!)
• More effective and faster update of existing entries as changes occur
• Add new features and facilities
• Update what we offer to reflect changing technologies
• Allow us to make the Gazetteer for Scotland a more useful educational resource
• Extend the historical depth
• Provide further information on historical counties and parishes to assist family historians
• More photographs
• More maps
• Ensure a future for the project

We would hope to use additional funding to support a researcher or small team of students to help maintain the Gazetteer for Scotland.
