First Printing in Scotland

1508

The earliest known printing in Scotland took place on the 4th April 1508 when copies of John Lydgate's poem The Complaint of the Black Knight were printed by Androw Myllar and Walter Chepman. In September 1507 King James IV granted the pair a patent to authorising them to set up a printing press in Edinburgh, which they did in the city's Cowgate.
