Broughty Ferry Lifeboat Disaster

1959

The Broughty Ferry lifeboat - the Mona - was launched in the early hours of Tuesday 8th December 1959 to aid the North Carr lightship which had broken her moorings in a severe storm. The lifeboat never reached its destination, but capsized at the entrance to the Firth of Tay and was found the next day on the sands to the east of Buddon Ness, with her crew of eight lost. A disaster fund raised more than £22,000, while the lifeboat was destroyed at Port Seton harbour on the orders of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution.
