Scotland introduced the world's first system of land registration, known as the Register of Sasines, in 1617. While criticised as a means of wealthy private individuals legitimising their acquisition of church land, following the Reformation, the Register has continued to the present day, although is slowly being replaced by a Land Register introduced by the Land Registration (Scotland) Act 1979. Both Registers are maintained by a Scottish Government agency, known as the Registers of Scotland, based in Meadowbank in Edinburgh.
