The Seton family originated in Northern France, most probably from Sai in Normandy, and those of Scotland are thought to have descended from the Counts of Boulogne. The Setons were established in Scotland by 1150 and they became prominent when Sir Christopher Seton married the sister of Robert I. By the coronation of Robert II the Seton family had been created Lords.

The Setons were supporters of Mary, Queen of Scots and aided her escape from Loch Leven Castle in 1568. The family were Jacobites forfeiting many of their titles by fighting for the cause.

There were Seton families of Abercorn and of Pitmedden both of which were Baronets of Nova Scotia.
