Sinderins
Sinderins, Dundee
©2013 Gazetteer for Scotland
An old-established district of W Central Dundee, the Sinderins stretches west for a mile (1.5 km) along the Perth Road from the University campus and the Nethergate. It grew rapidly in the 19th century associated with jute mills such as Thomson Shepherd & Company. Tenemental housing predominates, which once provided modest homes for thousands of poorly-paid workers. Narrow streets such as Strawberry Bank, Shepherd's Loan, Taylor's Lane and Step Row descend steeply to Magdalen Green. The factories have either been demolished or converted to flats and this gentrified area is now home to students and young professionals. The Hawkhill lies to the north.
