Inverie House

An unusual house which lies a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Inverie on the remote north shore of Loch Nevis in Knoydart, Inverie House was built in the early 19th century for Colonel Alasdair Macdonell of Glengarry (1773 - 1828), the last of the Highland chiefs. It passed to the Baird family in the late 19th century and in the 1930s became the property of the notorious Lord Brocket (1904-67). During the Second World War, Inverie was one of several houses in NW Scotland where agents were trained by the Special Operations Executive to be dropped in occupied Europe.

The house lay deserted but still fully-furnished for many years until it was acquired by the local community as part of their notable 1999 buy-out of the 7081-ha (17,200-acre) Knoydart Estate, but was soon sold on to provide funds for the development of the estate.
