A sizeable natural haven on the east coast of Lewis, Stornoway Harbour (Gael: Cala Steòrnabhaigh) lies to the south of Stornoway, the largest port of the Western Isles. It is opens onto the Minch and is entered from the south, protected by Arnish Point to the southwest and Holm Point to the northeast. One of Britain's worst maritime disasters took place just a half-mile (1 km) from the harbour entrance, when HMS Iolaire sank with the loss of 205 in 1919.
