The second highest peak of the Bennachie massif, Mither Tap (or more fully the Mither Tap o' Bennachie) rises to 518m (1733 feet) to the north of the River Don, 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Alford. On its bare granite summit is a prominent vitrified hill-fort, thought to have been occupied between 1000 BC and 1000 AD. Within the remains of the hill-fort is an Ordnance Survey primary triangulation pillar installed in
1936 for the re-triangulation of Great Britain.
