Located in the former Kirriemuir Town House in centre of that town, the Kirriemuir Gateway to the Glens Museum opened in 2001. It describes the culture, environment and history of Kirriemuir and the Western Angus Glens; namely Glen Prosen, Glenisla, Glen Clova and Glen Doll. It also has displays on famous sons and daughters of the town, including author J.M. Barrie (1860 - 1937), author Violet Jacob (1863 - 1946) and rock singer Bon Scott (1946-80).
The distinctive old Town House lies on the south side of The Square in Kirriemuir and is said to represent the oldest civic building in Angus which is still in daily use. Built as a Tolbooth in 1604, with the combined functions of court-house and jail, it is a compact red-sandstone edifice, comprising a stumpy clock-tower with a rounded structure behind. After a lengthy period of disuse, the building was sympathetically restored to house the museum.
This museum was named 'Scottish Museum of the Year' in 2001.
