Greengairs Power Station

Located at Greengairs in North Lanarkshire, on one of the largest landfill sites in Scotland, the Greengairs Power Station draws methane gas from the waste to generate 3.8 MW of power, enough for 2000 homes. The gas is collected through 4 miles (6 km) of pipework from 60 wells distributed over the site and filtered before being passed into the engines which drive the power station. The electricity generated is passed into the national power grid.

Representing an investment of £2.5 million, the power station is owned and operated by waste management company Shanks and McEwan.
