Situated in Edinburgh's Old Calton Burial Ground on the flanks of Calton Hill, the Emancipation Monument commemorates Scottish-American soldiers who fought in the American Civil War (1861-5). It comprises a bronze of Abraham Lincoln mounted on red granite pedestal, with an adoring freed slave kneeling at his feet. The memorial is the work of George W. Bissell of New York. Unveiled in August 1893, this was the first monument portraying Lincoln built outside the United States.
It bears the names of the fallen together with the words of Lincoln "To Preserve the Jewel of Liberty in the Framework of Freedom".
