Royal Commonwealth Pool

The Royal Commonwealth Pool can be found on the corner of Holyrood Park Road and Dalkeith Road, a mile (1.5 km) south of the centre of Edinburgh. Built for the 1970 Commonwealth Games, to the designs of Robert Matthew Johnson Marshall architects, the pool is a public facility owned by the City of Edinburgh Council and operated on their behalf by Edinburgh Leisure. As well as the 50m-long main pool which holds competitions of international status, there is a separate diving pool, a teaching pool, a set of water flumes, sauna and health-club facilities. Together the pools are said to contain more than 1 billion gallons (4.5 billion litres) of water. The pool provided a convenient venue again when the Commonwealth Games returned to Edinburgh in 1986, located next to the Athletes' Village in the University of Edinburgh's Pollock Halls of Residence complex. It was used again for diving events during the Glasgow Commonwealth Games of 2014 and the European Championships of 2018. A-listed in 1996, the building was nominated by the Architecture Heritage Society of Scotland in 2002 as one of the most significant modern contributions to Scottish heritage.
