Calton

(Blackfauld)

Taking its name from the Gaelic Coillduin meaning "wood on the hill", Calton (often The Calton) is that area of Glasgow's East End lying between Townhead in the city and Bridgeton to the east. Originally it was known as Blackfauld and was part of the Barrowfield Estate to the east. It was annexed to the city in 1846. The area has suffered from social problems, gaining a reputation as one of the most dangerous areas of the country in the 1960s and 70s, due to the operation of gangs and prostitution. Thereafter a period of renewal followed but still, in 2006, the area recorded the lowest male life expectancy in Scotland.
