Out Skerries Lighthouse

Located on Bound Skerry, the easternmost of the Out Skerries island group, the Out Skerries Lighthouse was built in 1858 by engineering brothers David (1815-86) and Thomas Stevenson (1818-87). This replaced a temporary structure established here at the request of the navy four years earlier. The lighthouse comprises a white tower, 30m (98 feet) in height, and sends its beam for up to 20 miles (32 km). It was automated in 1972 and is now remotely monitored from the Northern Lighthouse Board Headquarters in Edinburgh. This the most easterly lighthouse in the United Kingdom.
