Caledonian Paper Mill, Irvine

When it opened in 1989 at a cost of £215 million, the Caledonian Paper Mill represented the single largest inward investment in Scotland. Operated by Finnish-based multi-national UPM-Kymmene, this immense mill stretches alongside the A78(T) road for more than a third-of-a-mile (0.6 km) to the northeast of Dundonald Camp and 3 miles (5 km) south southeast of Irvine. The mill employs 370 and is the only UK-supplier of high-quality magazine paper. Timber is imported from around the world, pulped on site and mixed with imported pulp and china-clay from Cornwall to produce 280,000 tonnes of paper annually, which represents 20% of the total UK requirement for lightweight-coated paper.
