A sizeable obelisk on Castle Hill in Ardrossan (North Ayrshire), the MacFadzean Monument was erected in 1849 to the memory of Alexander MacFadzean (1788 - 1849), a local physician noted for his contribution to the town. He worked with the poor, encouraged good standards of hygiene, and is credited with originating the proposal to erect the town into a burgh, building a police station, and promoting schemes to provide street lighting as well as water and gas to every house.
It is said that relatives of Dr MacFadzean tried to purchase the monument, dismantle it and ship it to Australia in the 1970s, but the local authority refused to sell. It is now B-listed.
