Craigievar Castle

A Scottish Baronial castle built in 1626 by William Forbes, Craigievar Castle lies to the south of the village of Muir of Fowlis near Alford in central Aberdeenshire. Forbes, an Aberdeen merchant who had made his fortune trading with the Baltic, created a six-storey tower house with turrets, cupolas and corbelling. It escaped later alterations and remained in the hands of the Forbes family for most of its history. The interior is wholly Jacobean with vaulted ceilings and wood panelling. Craigievar's ancient charm made it an early tourist attraction whose reputation was enhanced by a visit from Queen Victoria and Prince Albert together with many of the crowned heads of Europe who were their guests. Craigievar Castle along with 121 ha (300 acres) of land was acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1963.
