A much-ruined rectangular tower on the edge of cliffs on the south coast of Arran, Kildonan Castle lies in a private garden at the eastern end of the village. Most likely built in the 14th C. by the MacDonalds, the Lords of the Isles, it had passed to the Crown by 1406 and was given to the Hamilton Earls of Arran in 1544. One corner of the tower still stands to four storeys; the basement and first floor hall were both barrel-vaulted, but there is no trace of an entrance or stair. The basement also features a pair of gun-loops.
