Wigtown Airfield

(RAF Wigtown; Baldoon Airfield)

A former Royal Air Force station located at Baldoon, 1¼ miles (2 km) south of Wigtown in Dumfries and Galloway, RAF Wigtown was established in 1941 as a bomber pilot training base. Originally with grass runways, these proved unsuitable due to flooding and two concrete runways were laid in 1942. Although closed 1948, the base was taken over as a private airfield and the main runway remains extant, although in poor condition, as are many of the original buildings. The airfield was still used occasionally post-2000, but much of the land had long-since returned to agricultural use.
