Home of Hibernian Football Club, Easter Road Park is located to the northeast of Edinburgh City Centre. The Club was established in 1875 by Irish immigrants who gave the team the name Hibernian, the Roman name for Ireland. Hibernian Football Club, locally known as Hibs, joined the Scottish League in 1876 and moved to Hibernian Park at Sunnyside just to the west of its current location in 1880. The lease on that ground having expired the club laid out Easter Road Park and moved there in 1892. While the record attendance at the stadium was 65,860 for an Edinburgh derby in 1950, the capacity today is a rather more modest 20,451 seats.
Hibs have been league champions four times, most recently in 1952, and Scottish Cup winners twice in 1887 and 1902. There is a close city rivalry with Heart of Midlothian Football Club which is located at Tynecastle Stadium in the city's western suburbs.
The first ever women's football match to be played under official Football Association rules was played at Hibernian Park on 7th May 1881. This was also the first women's international match, with the teams representing England and Scotland. Scotland won 3-0. Although the old Hibernian Park was redeveloped, it remains the site of Hibernian Football Supporters Club where a plaque was unveiled in 2019 to commemorate the women's event.
