Isle of Skye Airport

(Broadford Airstrip, Ashaig Airstrip)

Located at Ashaig, 3 miles (5 km) east of Broadford, the Isle of Skye Airport has the International Air Transport Association (IATA) location code "SKL". Constructed by the army (Royal Engineers) in 1972, the airport comprises a single asphalt runway extending to 771m (2529 feet) in length and 23m (75 feet) wide. There is no terminal building. Owned Highland Council, it is maintained for use by emergency services and private aeroplanes, while also serving as the home of the Skye Flying Club. Scheduled flights operated until 1988 and, in 2013, there was a campaign for their restoration. The airport has hosted music festivals, been used for land sailing (BloKarting) and as a film location. The opening sequence of the space opera Flash Gordon was shot here in 1979.
