Muness Castle

Muness Castle is located at the southeast corner of the Shetland island of Unst and is the most northerly castle of the British Isles. Built in 1598 by the Perthshire laird Laurence Bruce, a half-brother of Robert Stewart, Earl of Orkney, the Z-plan castle is now in ruins. It was burned by Dunkirk privateers in 1627 and abandoned by 1750 after being used by the Dutch East India Company in 1713 as storage for cargo salvaged from the wreck of the Rynenburgh.
