Vementry

An uninhabited island in the parish of Aithsting, Vementry lies to the north of the West Mainland of Shetland from which it is separated by the Cribba and Uyea Sounds. It has a particularly complex coastline, deeply indented by inlets the most prominent of which are Northra Voe and Suthra Voe. The island has an area of 370 ha (914 acres) and rises to 90m (295 feet) at Muckle Ward which is capped by a circular chambered cairn, one of the best-preserved in Shetland. The Swarbacks Minn separates Vementry from the island of Muckle Roe to the north.
