Charing Cross
A district at the centre of Glasgow's west end, Charing Cross lies between the residential areas of Garnethill and Woodlands and the industrial area of Anderston. Named after Charing Cross in London, the district has some of Glasgow's most elegant buildings, including the Charing Cross Mansions (1891), the St. George's Mansions (1901) and the Mitchell Library (1911). Transport policy in the 1960s resulted in the development of the M8 motorway extension to the Kingston Bridge cutting through the heart of Charing Cross and effectively creating a barrier to development between the city and the West End.
