Overview of High Street

High Street is one of Glasgow's oldest thoroughfares and as such many of the early city's most important buildings were situated close by. It was here that Glasgow University had its first permanent site. However by the 19th Century the area had fallen into disrepair, the university had relocated to the fashionable west-end and many of the buildings had been demolished. Although much of the area has been rebuilt under the City Improvement Trust, it is still a sparse and underdeveloped street, with few signs of its importance in the social history of Glasgow.
