Overview of Saltmarket, The

The Saltmarket refers to the street which runs south from Glasgow Cross towards the River Clyde. A popular place to live for early 18th Century Glaswegian merchants, it was formerly known as the Waulcergait and was associated with fullers (scourers of woollen cloth). Like most of Glasgow City Centre's eastern edge it had fallen into disrepair and neglect, although regeneration work was undertaken in the 2000s, with new housing being developed and civic spaces improved. At the southern end of the street is located the western entrance to Glasgow Green, the Glasgow High Courts, while nearby lies Paddy's Market, the Barras, the McLennan Arch and St. Andrews Church.
