Lochan Shira

A reservoir on the course of the River Shira in E Argyll & Bute, Lochan Shira is restrained by the Glen Shira Dam, a 686-m (2250-feet) long buttress dam which stands 40.5m (133 feet) in height and was the work of engineering consultants Babtie, Shaw & Morton. The reservoir was constructed in 1956 and is at the centre of the Glen Shira Hydro Electric Scheme, a western but unconnected section of the Sloy-Awe Hydro-Electric scheme which was completed in 1959.
