Cruachan Reservoir

A reservoir constructed in the 1960s in a small corrie on the southeastern flank of Ben Cruachan in Argyll and Bute, the Cruachan Reservoir represents the upper store for the Cruachan Hydro-Electric Scheme and is retained by a buttress dam. Water in pumped up from Loch Awe during periods of low electricity demand through the underground Cruachan Power Station, to be released at peak times to generate power, providing an effective means of storing electrical potential, something which is otherwise impossible. This water is supplemented by natural runoff and water diverted into the reservoir from surrounding catchments. The outflow from the reservoir is through two 5-m (16-foot) shafts, each of which are 402m (1318 feet) in length.
