Sanday

An island of the Inner Sound in Highland Council Area, Sanday lies immediately to the south of the island of Canna, to which it is joined at low tide. Sanday extends to 2 miles (3 km) in length and a half-mile (1 km) in width. Relatively low-lying, it rises to 59m (193 feet) at Tallabric, and extends to 191 ha (472 acres). The northern coastline of Sanday protects Canna Harbour. Settlement is on this north coast, but its population has proved unstable: it was uninhabited in 1961, but supported a population of 11 (1971) and 7 (1981). It was uninhabited again in 1991, but supported 6 people in 2001 and 9 (2011). Like its larger neighbour, Sanday was the property of Gaelic scholar Dr. John Lorne Campbell (1906-96) who gave both islands to the National Trust for Scotland in 1981. A small school on Sanday also serves Canna, while a half-mile (0.8 km) to the east is the St. Edward Centre, a hostel and study centre that was opened by HRH the Princess Royal in 2001.
