A nationally-important Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) situated between the Rivers Borgie and Naver on the north coast of Sutherland (Highland Council Area), the Invernaver National Nature Reserve extends to 552 ha (1364 acres) to the south of Torrisdale Bay and a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Bettyhill. The site is of botanical interest, with unusual fixed and shifting dune ecosystems together with fens, alpine and boreal heaths, alpine and subalpine calcareous grasslands and peatlands. These grade into montane environments. The exposed nature of the site gives rise to notable dwarf shrubs and allows unusual alpine species grow almost at sea level. Plants include a wide range of lime and acid loving species such as bearberry, crowberry, mountain avens and moss campion. The raised beach contains archaeological sites.
Designated as an SSSI and a National Nature Reserve in 1960, it lost this latter status in 2002 due to changing policies and land-use pressures. The principal use is as common grazing by the surrounding communities, although the land is also used for sporting purposes by its owners, the Achnabourin Estate and the Sutherland Estates.
