St Aloysius' College

Comprising a collection of buildings centred around Hill Street in the Garnethill district of Glasgow, St Aloysius' College is a private fee-paying co-educational Roman Catholic school. It comprises a kindergarten, junior and senior school, and accepts children from the ages of 3 to 18. The school was founded in 1859 and, today, has roll of 1300 pupils.

The school has grown from its original location in the Italianate palazzo-style Chandlery Building (1866), with its Doric portico. This was once an Episcopalian school which was extensively rebuilt and extended (1882-3). It now houses the school administration, library and refectory. It was named in honour of Father Peter Chandlery, who was Head Master from 1882-88. The Chandlery Building was extended to form the Hanson Building, completed in 1908 and itself extended with further classrooms, a chapel and gymnasium in 1926. The Mount Building was constructed as a private house in 1848 and, after time as the Sick Children's hospital and another school, was acquired by St Aloysius in 1984. Today it is home to the music, art and drama departments and the Kindergarten. The Junior School was a new-build, opened in 1998 and winning the prestigious Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Award for Architecture the following year. This was augmented by the Clavius Building (2002), which accommodates science laboratories, maths classrooms and Information Technology rooms and won a further RIBA award in 2004. The building was named after Father Christopher Clavius, a 17th Century Jesuit mathematician and scientist.

The College is owned and operated by the British Society of Jesus (the Jesuits). Nearby is the fine St Aloysius' Church (1910), with which the College is closely associated.
