An immense 23-arch railway viaduct which once carried the Waverley Line southeast over the River South Esk, the Lothianbridge Viaduct swings majestically into Newtongrange (Midlothian) alongside the A7 Trunk Road, 1½ miles (2.5 km) south southwest of Dalkeith. Also known as the Newbattle, Newtongrange or Dalhousie Viaduct, this fine B-listed masonry structure was completed in 1847 and is almost a third-of-a-mile (0.5 km) in length. It was the work of John Miller (1805-83). This is the second viaduct to be built here; the original (constructed 1830-32) lay just to the east and some associated earthworks remain.
Lothianbridge closed with the rest of the line in 1969, but reopened in 2015 following repair and repointing to carry the new Borders Railway.
