Arthurstone House

A fine old mansion located a half-mile (1 km) north of Ardler in Perth and Kinross, Arthurstone House was built for Captain James Ramsay of Hook (Hampshire, England) in the late 1790s.

Once the property of the Cistercian Abbey at Coupar Angus, following the Reformation the estate of Arthurstone passed to one of the five sons of the last and most famous Abbot Donald Campbell, son of Archibald Campbell, the 2nd Earl of Argyll (d.1513).

In 1838, the house was much altered and extended by Patrick Murray of Simprim, although some of these were dismantled within a generation by Murray's son-in-law Admiral Brunswick Popham. It was bought in 1858 by Admiral Lord Wharncliffe and, in 1869, sold again to Peter Carmichael, partner in the Dundee firm of Baxter Brothers. Carmichael remodelled the house and gardens, adding a library and a billiard room. In 1870, a gas-works was built to provide lighting for the house.

Sold by the Carmichael family in 1990, it was until 2005 the home of Butterstone School, a small independent boarding school for girls.
