Hailes

A small district and ancient parish in Edinburgh, located between the A70 Lanark Road to the west and the Water of Leith to the east, Hailes lies a quarter-mile (0.4 km) northwest of Colinton village. This was once an estate, which was first recorded in 1095, when the land was given to Dunfermline Abbey by Ethelred, son of Malcolm Canmore. Hailes House, which dates from c.1765, lay at the centre of the estate. Development began round 1910, with most of the area being laid out in the 1930s. The small settlement of Hailes lay a half-mile (1 km) to the north northwest, beyond Kingsknowe Station. Hailes Quarry operated from 1750 until 1900 and is now the site of a public park. On the other side of the A70, Wester Hailes is a large public housing estate.
