Battery Park

A public park and sports ground in Inverclyde, Battery Park lies in the Fort Matilda district of Greenock, 1½ miles (2.5 km) northwest of the town centre. Gourock Bay lies immediately to the west and the former Fort Matilda to the east. Created in the 19th century as an area of flat land using the spoil extracted during the building of a nearby railway tunnel, the park became a base for Catalina flying boats during the Second World War and their ramp descending into the river remains.

Today, facilities include an all-weather floodlit astroturf pitch for football and hockey, grass football pitches, a children's play area, a skateboard park, a pavilion incorporating a changing area and a cafe.

Inverclyde Council holds an annual fireworks display here and Battery Park is a popular venue for events and gala days, including the European Pipe Band Championships in 2007.
