The busiest of Greenock's railway stations, Greenock West (Gael: Grianaig an Iar) is situated on the Inverclyde Line, a quarter-mile (0.5 km) west of the town centre. This station was opened in 1889 by Caledonian Railway when the Greenock line was extended to Gourock. The rectangular red-sandstone station building once had separate first class waiting rooms for ladies and gentlemen. Now operated by ScotRail, Greenock West Station is staffed part-time and is used by more than 550,000 passengers per annum (2015). It is preceded by Greenock Central Railway Station, a half-mile (1 km) to the east southeast, and followed by Fort Matilda, 1¼ miles (2 km) to the northwest through the Newton Street Tunnel which begins immediately to the west of this station.
