Gleann Diomhan

A valley of N Arran, Gleann Diomhan descends from between Beinn Bhreac and Beinn Tarsuinn to meet Glen Catacol 2 miles (3 km) south southwest of Lochranza. A National Nature Reserve here protects two unique and endangered tree species: the Arran Whitebeam (Sorbus arranensis) and Arran Service-Tree or Cut-Leaved Whitebeam (Sorbus pseudofennica). These were first recorded in 1897 but not separated as two distinct species until 1952. The nature reserve was designated in 1956.
