Dalmarnock Railway Bridge

The Dalmarnock Railway Bridge was built 1893-97 to carry twin tracks across the River Clyde, between Dalmarnock and Rutherglen, for the Caledonian Railway. Now carrying the Argyle Line across the border between Glasgow City and South Lanarkshire, next to Dalmarnock Sewage Works, the bridge comprises six spans - three in steel over the river, with three approach spans constructed in brick - with sandstone piers and abutments. It was widened to carry an additional track in 1923.

The braced triple-cylinder piers of an earlier bridge can be seen immediately to the west. This seven-span structure was built 1859-61 and continued in use after the current bridge was built until the capacity of a five-track crossing was no longer required. The deck was subsequently removed.
