Located on Glenurquhart Road in Inverness, a half-mile (0.8 km) southwest of the town centre, the Headquarters of Highland Council comprise a set of administrative buildings constructed for the former Invernessshire County Council. These are mostly modern (in concrete and glass, dating from 1961-63) but include a range facing onto Ardross Street which were built 1875-76 as the former North Counties Collegiate School by local architect Alexander Ross (1834 - 1925) and extended by him ten years later.
A modern council chamber on the first floor seats 120 and has advanced audio-visual facilities which permit video-conferencing. The Knocknagael Boar Stone, dating from around 800 AD, is now located within the building.
Previously Inverness Town Council sat in the Town House on the High Street, while Inverness-shire County Council had used Inverness Castle.
