Arkleton

A Victorian Baronial mansion and estate in Ewesdale, NE Dumfries and Galloway, Arkleton is situated on the right bank of the Ewes Water, a half-mile (1 km) northeast of Ewes and 4½ miles (7 km) north of Langholm. The house was built in two stages (1860 and 1884) and comprises three storeys, with a four-storey tower projecting to the south. This tower, with its corbelled-out pepperpot turrets and square bartizan, gives the impression of being an ancient tower-house, but it is not. However, the house does incorporate stone from Arkleton Tower, which once stood near and was built in the 16th century although completely demolished in the early 19th century. Arkleton was the Scottish home of the unfortunate Captain Walter Scott-Elliot, a retired businessman and Labour politician who, along with his wife, was murdered by their butler in 1977. Arkleton then became home to John Higgs, founder of the Arkleton Trust which is dedicated to finding new approaches to rural development through education and training. Arkleton became the locus for prestigious seminars on this subject.
