Dalmarnock Sewage Works

An immense sewage-processing plant constrained within a meander of the River Clyde at Dalmarnock in E Glasgow. The plant opened in 1894 and the residual sewage sludge was originally sold as fertiliser. Disposal of the sludge at sea proved difficult because the works were far upstream, but in 1914 a 5½-mile (9-km) long 225mm (9 inch) pipe was laid across the city to the Shieldhall Sewage Works which was more accessible to shipping. The plant is now operated by Scottish Water.
