Aberdeen Snowsports Centre

(Garthdee Sports & Alpine Adventure Park)

A busy year-round skiing and snowboarding centre on Garthdee Road in Kaimhill, Aberdeen Snowsports Centre overlooks a retail park and the River Dee, 2 miles (3 km) southwest of the city centre. Opened in 2004 as Garthdee Sports & Alpine Adventure Park, the facility had been redeveloped at the cost of £2.3 million by Aberdeen City Council on the site of an existing dry ski slope which had closed in 1996, having lost some of its land to an adjacent new supermarket development. The local authority had courted controversy having taken so long to re-open the facility. Management transferred to a private company in 2007.

The Centre offers three separate ski slopes: a 100-m (328-foot) alpine slope which is covered in snowflex - a synthetic soft carpet of artificial snow - and served by a button tow; an additional slope composed of an older-technology dendix carpet, with a poma tow; and a 35-m (114-foot) snowflex nursery slope with a travelator to move customers to the top. There is a further dendix slope for 'tubing'. Flood-lighting is provided for night events. In addition, there is a full-size floodlit FieldTurf artificial football pitch, measuring 100m x 64m (328 feet x 209 feet), and two grass pitches.

A purpose-built ski lodge provides changing rooms (for skiing and football), administration offices and ski hire.
