The Lang Stane

(Langstane)

A mysterious monument contained within an ashlar alcove on the corner of Langstane Place and Dee Street, immediately to the south of Union Street in the centre of Aberdeen, the Lang Stane is a roughly hewn granite monolith approximately 1.5m (5 feet) in height. Probably a Mediaeval march stone marking a traditional boundary, the stone has certainly been located on this spot since at least 1746, when it appears on G. & W. Paterson's Map of Old and New Aberdeen. It may have originally been part of a prehistoric stone circle and was inscribed "Lang Stane" c.1850.
